Arbor Day of Service

Arbor Day of Service is a vital event where Penn-Del Chapter members come together to volunteer in the community and provide tree care service for free. Sites are chosen based on need. If you would like to have your site considered for an Arbor Day of Service, contact us. Sites are chosen by the Arbor Day Committee.

Please consider volunteering for these worthwhile efforts.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make all three Penn-Del Arbor Days of Service a great success!!  An extra special thank you goes out to Pete Fixler, Ellen Roane, Jim Savage, and Mark Wheeler for coordinating these events.

2017 Events

Pittsburgh Event:

The 2017 Penn-Del ISA Western Arbor Day of Service was held on March 31, 2017 at The Homewood Cemetery and Arboretum. 16 crews participated in pruning, removals, and plantings to help the Arboretum's aging tree population. Despite the non-stop rain throughout the day, participants remained excited about the project and accomplished quite a lot of work. The Homewood Cemetery and Arboretum is a 200 acre nonprofit cemetery in the City of Pittsburgh which became an accredited arboretum in 2014. The grounds are full of mature beech, oak, linden, fir, pine, magnolia and many other species of notable size and age for the area.

Participants included:
Asplundh Tree Expert Co.
Bartlett Tree Experts - Irwin and McDonald offices
Carl's Tree Service
City of Pittsburgh Forestry Division

York Event:

The Central Pennsylvania Arbor Day of Service was held this year in the City of York on Friday, April 28 at Lincoln Park (now called James Gross Park in honor of the outgoing Public Works Director.) By all accounts, the day was a huge success, with excellent participation and beautiful weather. Penn-Del Chapter members provided a tremendous service to the City of York, primarily in removing large dead and dying ash trees dangerously overhanging playground equipment, and in pruning of other mature trees on the site. The state Bureau of Forestry also assisted in locating buyers to utilize the wood that was generated, returning a small profit to the City toward the purchase of additional trees. Participating were seven tree companies, two crane operators, one electric utility, two municipalities, two mills, and one state agency. They included:

  • Asplundh Tree Expert Company
  • Bartlett Tree Experts
  • City of Harrisburg
  • City of York
  • The Crane Man
  • DCNR Bureau of Forestry
  • Eagle Claw Tree Service
  • Glatfelter Paper Company
  • Goods Tree Care
  • Iron Stag Crane
  • Met-Ed / First Energy
  • Moonlight Landscape & Tree LLC
  • Penn Line Service Inc
  • Stolzfus Forest Products
  • York Tree Family

At mid-day the City held its annual Arbor Day ceremony, involving Mayor Kim Bracey, a representative from the DCNR Secretary’s office, and Devers Elementary School. The City received recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for its 33rd Year. City staff served the crews grilled hamburgers and hotdogs at picnic tables beneath the shade of the trees. Volunteers from the York Rotary and Garden clubs joined DCNR volunteers to plant trees throughout the afternoon at neighboring Kiwanis Lake Park, while tree crews continued their work. Additional trees will be planted at James Gross Park following the event to replace the trees that were removed, with funding provided by DCNR, the York Garden Club, and Met-Ed; and with income from the sale of material removed.
